MSN's Hotmail Now Offers 5 Gigs Of Storage

October 16, 2007

Sean Bolton

Just last week I noticed my Hotmail account had undergone a complete makeover. Not only does Hotmail now offer 5 Gigs of email space but the interface itself seems less arduous to use than its biggest rival, GMail.

I have had my Hotmail account for about thirteen years now and just can't let it go for some reason. I think it may be because it's one of those comfort zones I just can't let go nor want to get out of for whatever reason. And with the new facelift, it has solidified my resolve to continue to use it for a looooong time to come.

Some of the new features are VERY Google-esque. A good example of this would be MSN's Calendar which like Google, allows you to jot down your to-do list for whatever it is ya got planned. Also similar to Google's GMail, you can search your emails and/or Live.com with MSN's own search technology via the hotmail interface.

There's a ton of other new features with Hotmail but I just don't have the time to list them all here.

I see solid progress for Microsoft with their Hotmail relaunch, but still see room for improvement, and of course, room for intrusion. Like GMail, I anticipate seeing content-matched ads appearing in Hotmail emails sometime soon.

Greed. Let me explain. Who can read 5 gigs of email in a reasonable amount of time, who wants to keep over 50 years of emails?Oh sorry miscalc....billions of years of emails...Who will really care. I think that its not too smart for a company like microsoft....so what do they REALLY WANT FROM THE PUBLIC for FREEEEEEE!!!!!!Information we want information, your number is 6!!! See the prisioner, english, 60's tv show. Now if the were smarter than the AVERAGE BEAR, heey YOGI! they would simply offer a 5 gig personal, password protected internet hardrive. They would then get more real dirty laundry than they could use and the Feds would CLEAN UP!!!!Period!!!!!Think of all the criminal minds like perverts, tax evaders or whatever that would JUMP at the simple notion that they could store critical data offsite with no other access but them. Hey works for me I'm a businessman.I'd store company data on a drive if I thought that nobody had access but me..Sheesh another no brainer. So how does this relate to greed, tis simple. If you follow the shine you miss the gold, sorta like fishing...Uh Hillbilly logic, that is my opinion and I'm sticking to it, now go think for yourselves for a while.

What GMail can do, Hotmail can do better! Your solution to a SPAM dumpsite!

Actually, I think it is disk sharing. Even if a thousand people take 5 GB each, all of them are unlikely to use the whole of it . Rather these one thousand of them will probably share not more than a few GB with all their emails and attachment combined. So the company is actually not putting up (5000 GB) so much hard disk but making you feel that you own a lot of real estate in there, which you actually do not require, but is available to you if you ever need that much space.

It is like fooling some one to believe that he needs 5 GB when he actually does not need so much. The company may just add a few more GB space and will keep adding as and when they fill up. No one is likely to be using all 5GB ever. So as their hard disk spaces starts running out they will add more space. For a common man he has the option to fill up 5 GB of data if he ever needs, but how many actually need it? In effect we are all sharing a building that each of us think we own, but are actually staying in just one room which can expand if you have a guest any time.

I don't need 5gb of storage but it's usefull because now I never have to delete mails anymore.

Thanks!

Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana.
